As you scroll through the chart clicking on the video icon it will dynamically search YouTube to see whether there are any associated videos or recordings of this particular track. These will be listed in the video bar on the left which you can then click into.
You can place your vote for any particlar song by clicking on the ratings icon where you will have the opportunity to award the track 1, 2 , 3, 4 or 5 stars.

Our chart today is a compilation of many of the must have soul and boogie tracks dating back to 1975 when the first 12” single was first introduced to the world. We’ve chosen to restrict the list to releases up to and including 1990, if only to make the project somewhat more manageable and to also reflect the break in tyle that occurred once the whole dance thing really kicked off in the early 1990s.

Unusually, this list only includes tracks that were released as 12” singles, the majority of which were US pressings, but does extend to other countries of release. This does, therefore, exclude an even bigger tranche of essential releases, be they 45s or album cuts. Consider that project one for the future. What it does do though, is to bring together in one location many of the sounds that have over the years, defined a whole musical movement. Whenever possible you’ll be able to access the many uploads to YouTube, and at the click of a button you’ll be able to conveniently listen to those entries on the chart you may not have heard before.

The methodology for inclusion to a large extent involved us going through our very extensive database at Beat Street Records, adding the tracks to the chart as we saw fit. Over the years most of these have passed through our hands, a large percentage of which have been hidden away in Allan’s personal collection. At first guess, we’ll probably need to add another 1000 titles to make it properly reflect what tunes should be on the chart.

Now for the tricky bit, on day one every entry on the chart has been given a total score of 5 stars, and the whole chart has been ordered to reflect the favourites down at Beat St. However, as the vote gets added to the scoring system the position of the entries will very quickly move around. Only with time, and hopefully with the interaction of many users, will we get to a statistically relevant result.

In the meantime, enjoy the music and keep voting away.
